The Mamluk Cairo: A Morphological Case Study is part of Dillon's coursework for his Islamic Urbanism Seminar. As part of his research, Dillon is focusing on patterns of growth in Medieval Cairo under the Mamluk Sultanate in the fourteenth century. Here, Dillon will analyze the political, religious, commercial, and mortuary institutions of the city. In addition, Dillon will study the history of domestic structures, gardens design, and infrastructure in order to form a comprehensive picture of Cairene urban form and fabric. Ultimately, the case study will examine the ways in which Islam can culturally influence the development of Arab cities in ways that are both profound and unresponsive. Dillon's case study will challenge Western conceptions and impositions of the city on the Muslim world while also expanding his knowledge of urban precedent and practice.
